Mrs. Gertrude Walker, 8927 River Road, Columbus, died at Doctors Hospital Wednesday, April 27, 2005. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 2, 2005 at 3 p.m. from Prospect A.M.E. Church in Fortson with Reverend Willie House, Jr. officiating with burial in the church cemetery. She was born March 8, 1930 in Harris County, daughter of John and Louvenia Stevens and was a member of Prospect A.M.E. Church. Preceding her in death was her husband, Walter Walker, Sr., and 9 siblings. Surviving are sons, James Walker, Joseph (Christine) Walker and Walter (Barbara) Walker Jr. of Columbus; daughters, Catherine Walker of Philadelphia, Susie Hamp, Jacqueline Thomas of Columbus and Louvonia (Julius) Adams of Fortson; 34 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn P Walker, two daughters, Jamell Walker of Chicago, Jabrenia (Andrew) Robinson, a grandson, Walker R Robinson; four sisters, Curtiseen Lipscomb-Childs of Columbus, Learah (Douglas) Smith of Clarksville, TN, Mary Peterson of Elk Grove, IL, Paulette Holston of Columbus, a brother, Anthony Quinn of Columbia, MO. He was a 1960 graduated in South Girard High School and was an Alabama State under-graduate, Master Degree from Atlanta University, and a PhD from Penn State. He held university administration post in California, Colorado, Tennessee and Illinois and was president at Southern Illinois University. He had four universities under his administration located in Chicago, IL, Springfield, IL, Carbondale, IL, Edwardsville, MO, and in Japan. Memorial celebration Mass was held at St Frances Xavier Catholic Church February 11 in Carbondale.
