She died Thursday, December 8, 2005 at the Flint River Hospital in Montezuma. She was born February 12, 1912 near Swainsboro, Emanuel County, GA, daughter of Tom and Addie Turner Howell. She was a member of St James Baptist Church in Emanuel County and after moving to Montezuma in 1946, joined New Hope Baptist Church. She earned a B. S. Degree in Home Economics at Savannah State University and a Master’s Degree from Tuskegee Institute. She studied at Fort Valley State College and through the University of Georgia Extension Service. She was the widow of Deacon Henry James Ladd Sr. Her son, Henry James Ladd, Jr, preceded her in death in 2005. She began teaching in Hoffman, NC. Upon coming to Macon County, her husband taught agriculture and she taught home management at Flint River Farms School. When D. F. Douglass High School opened in 1959, they taught 5 high school adult education classes. Survivors include 3 sisters in law: Jessie Bell Ladd of Americus, Dora Howell of Swainsboro and Ruby Lee Felton of Rochester, NY; nieces and nephews, Loretta (Felder) Daniel, Jena Ladd, Johnny Ladd and Raygene Ladd of Americus, Robert (Mildred) Ladd of Montezuma, Dorothy (Johnnie) Graves of Brunswick, Tommie (Sam) Hickson of Augusta, Bill (Thelma) Smith, Robert (Toni) Smith, James (Joy) Smith, Shirley (Johnny) Johnson, Bertha and Pauline of Rochester, NY, Costell Ladd of Binghamton, NY, Penny of Detroit, MI, Mattie Whitaker and Willie Bell White of Miami, FL. |

William Ladner died Thursday, June 3, 2004 at his residence. He was born in Picayune, Pearl River County, MS, son of Seth and Clara Gillespie Ladner. He served three years in the US Army during the Korean War and attended Folorida A&M University, Albany State University and Georgia State University at Fort Benning. He received a Masters degree at Columbus State Univeristy and retired after thirty-four years teaching in Mississippi and in Muscogee County School District in Georgia. Surviving are three sons, Ronald (Sonya) Ladner of Munich, Germany, Dexteralan (Renee) Ladner Sr. of Columbus and Craig (Susan) Ladner of Phenix City; eleven grandchildren, Taneal, Dominic, Jaquintin, Felicia, Casandra, Iyhata, Craig, Jr., Dexteralan III, Dallis, Kebven and Donivohn; a sister, Willmetta (Isaac) Benson of Waterboro, SC; a brother, Leslie (Helen) Humphrey of Newfoundland, Canada; an aunt, Hattie Power of Mt Olive, MS. Funeral services and burial will be held Wednesday, June 9, at 4 p.m. at Mt Pleasant C.M.E. Church and cemetery. |

He was a free lance writer for many African and other developing country magazines and for the BBC radio. He started a news agency from Africa, called the "Third Eye Monitor". He moved back to Columbus and traveled back and forth between Columbus and London.
