Americus Times-Recorder |
Tuesday, June 19, 1990 |
Greene Funeral Home of Rock Hill, SC |
Darryl Bailey Jr. was born in 1984. He died July 17, A futile 2-day search for the body of a 6-year old Americus youth who drowned late Sunday in the Flint River climaxed late this morning when authorities discovered the body in Reeves Landing. According to a spokesperson at the Sumter County Sheriff’s department, rescue workers pulled the body of Darryl Bailey, Jr. from the murky waters of the river at approximately 9:50 a.m., two miles south of Reeves Landing. Police, on Sunday, recovered the bodies of two other persons involved in the tragedy, Darryl Bailey, Sr., 26, the boy’s father and Charles T. Smith, 33. According to witnesses at the scene, the elder Bailey, a local paint contractor who had another young son and daughter, was carrying Darryl Jr. across a shallow portion of the river to a sandbar around 7 p.m. when he was believed to have lost his footing. Smith, a neighbor of Bailey’s at Briarcliff Trailer Park, then began futile attempts to retrieve the father and son from the water went unsuccessful when, Smith too, apparently lost his footing in the vicinity of where the earlier accident had taken place moments before. It is speculated that the area the three were in may have been the site of a “black hole” that drops off more than twenty feet at one point. “We don’t know what happened”, said Sheriff Randy Howard. “He (Bailey) either stepped in a pothole or into the channel, then went down and dropped the kid.” Mr.. Bailey, who moved here about five years ago from South Carolina is survived by his wife Charyl Horne Bailey of Americus; a daughter, Crystal Bailey of Americus, a son, Joshua Bailey of Americus; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Bailey of Rock Hill, SC, a sister, Kimberly Bunton of Walterborough, SC, four brothers, Bobby Bailey Jr. of Atlanta, Michael Bailey of Rock Hill and Gregory and Jeffrey Bailey of Acworth. Barnum Funeral Home will announce arrangements. |
