Funeral services for Harden Ragin of 1116 North Lee Stgreet, Americus, GA, who died Thursday, October 18, 2007 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home, will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, October 25, 2007 at New Hope Baptist Church in Montezuma, GA. Reverend Bobby Brown will officiate. He was born May 9, 1921 in Cordele, GA, son of Claybon and Anna Adams Ragin. He was a member of Macedonia C.M.E. Church in Fort Valley, GA. He graduated from H A Hunt High School in Fort Valley and from FOrt Valley State College, earned a BS in Agriculture. He was a US Army veteran of WW II. He and Miss Esther West of Macon County, GA were wed August 1, 1959 and blessed with 44 years marriage. Esther died Ocgtober 23, 2003. He taught Agriculture in several southwest Georgia conties and in Plains and Americus over 37 years before retiring. He was preceded in death by sister, Estella Williams, Sina Hollingshed, Olivia Sanders and Myrties Parker; brothers, Carlton, Charlton, Edgar, Oscar and Albert Ragin. Survivors include 2 sisters, Amanda (Lewis "L C") Lyons of Fort Valley and Naomi Ragin of Orlando, FL; sisters in laws, Mary Ragn and Jessie Ragin of Fort Valley; brothers in law, Edgar West of Montezuma and Frederick West of Jackson. |

Mrs. Nellie Williams Raines, 96, of Route 1, Box 104, Ideal, GA, died Tuesday at Flint River Hospital in Montezuma, GA. She was born November 30, 1896 in Crawford County, GA, daughter of Jimmy and Parthenia Reed Williams and the widow of Charlie raines. She attended Normal Industrial School in Fort Valley and was a pious member of Olive Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Crawford County and present member of Travelers Home Missionary Baptist church in Grangerville community. Survivors include children: Nancy raines Vivins, Remus Raines, Sr, Bennie Raines Sr, all of Ideal, GA, James Raines of Vero Beach, Fl and Willie Lee Raines of Mauk; daughters in law, Millie Raines, Willie Faye Raines, Juliett Raines, and Joyce Raines, all of Ideal and Bessie Raines of Oglethorpe; thirty-five grandchildren. Gertrude Pridgett was born April 26, 1886 in Columbus, GA. Gertrude made her first stage performance at the age of fourteen as a part in “A Bunch of Blackberries” at the Springer Opera House in Columbus. She Married Will Rainey, a singing comedian with “Rabbit Foot Minstrels” and they formed a song and dance team and toured in tent shows throughout the south. She and Bessie Smith met in Chattanooga, TN about 1910 and in 1912, Smith appeared with the Rainey duo in Moses Stokes show at the Ivory Theatre in Chattanooga. They toured in Fat Chappelle’s tent shows in 1915 and in 1917 appeared for the first time as “Madame Gertrude Rainey and her Georgia Smart Set”. After retiring in Mexico in 1921, she made her first record with ParaMt. Her last appearance in a carnival show in 1935, she retired. After the deaths of her sister and mother, she settled back in Columbus and worked for churches and a couple of theatres. She died December 22, 1939 and is buried in Porterdale cemetery in Columbus, GA. |
